Sigríður Tómasdóttir was a real person
She was born on a sheep farm near Gullfoss waterfalls and was one of Iceland’s first environmentalists. She and her family sometimes took people on tours around the waterfall to make extra money.
When there was a plan to make the waterfalls into a hydroelectric plant she organized protests, met members of the Athing and wrote to newspapers. Eventually she was successful and the falls were saved. They were then bought by the Icelandic government for tourism.
If you go to the falls today, you can see a sculpture of her on the path towards the falls.
