Nicola de la Haye was a real person

Her father was a rich man who owned some land and castles. When he died, Nicola owned the land with her husband, and became the Sheriff of Lincolnshire as well. She defended her castle against two sieges and didn’t stop defending the castle until she was 70 years old.

It was unusual for a woman to be Sheriff in those days, although it was more normal for women to have to defend their castles - if their husbands or fathers were away fighting, it was a woman’s job to defend the castle and look after all the people in it.

Every time you meet a woman who was a known historical figure, you get a Famous Woman Badge.
