SSM Alerts

SSM Alerts, or Sensitive Subject Matter Alerts are used when Zeke and Questa encounter a topic that is scary, complicated, emotional or contentious. Before they can progress to learn more, children must first pass a little test. The test is designed to help them learn, not get answers wrong or right.

The quiz might be used to challenge stereotypes, model good behaviour or make sure that children know what to do if something is overwhelming.

We believe that children are capable of understanding almost anything, provided it is addressed in age-appropriate language.

However, we’re also aware that lots of parents would like to check the content that their children encounter. Some parents want additional support in talking about these issues with their kids.

This page allows parents to review the SSM Alert content for each country, as well as finding resources to help them talk with their children and help them understand.

NB. Some countries don’t have SSM Alerts

The Roma Community

Spain country quest

We talk about the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Community in our Spain Country Quest, when Questa and Zeke meet Carmen Amaya, a famous flamenco dancer who was also a member of the Romani community. Our SSM talks about common prejudices against GRT peoples, and why discrimination is wrong.

It’s crucial that parents model respectful conversations and language when discussing GRT peoples and issues.

Hiroshima, Nagasaki & Nuclear War

japan country quest

In our Japan Country Quest, Zeke and Questa meet a young girl who is beginning to learn about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, particularly as it relates to Sadako Sasaki, a young survivor who became a symbol of peace in the aftermath.

Parents and guardians can help mitigate fears about nuclear war, and war more generally, by having gentle, honest, age-appropriate conversations with children.
