Let’s learn about Mexico with Zeke and Questa

Zeke and Questa are the main characters in Questa Kids, an online educational game for kids aged 7-12.

The knowledge of the world is in danger, and Zeke’s been sent back in time to fix it. He thinks he’ll be working with world leaders, but the only person who will help him is a girl called Questa, who hates learning. Together they’ll travel through the space and time of different countries, helping people with tasks to collect Learning Tokens. If they collect enough, they might just save the world.

The Mexico Country Quest is the fourth Country Quest

Mexico is an amazing country with lots to learn about.

It’s got delicious food, incredibly biodiversity, strong traditions, a long, long, long history and lots of weird and wonderful animals.

Here are 5 of Zeke’s favourite facts about Mexico:

1. The biggest pyramid in the world is in Mexico

You might think the Egyptian Pyramids of Giza are the largest, but that’s not actually true! The Great Pyramid of Cholula is the largest pyramid in the world. It was built by the Toltecs and dedicated to the God, Quetzalcoatl (if you want to hear a story about Quetzalcoatl and how he and his brothers created the sun, watch our video…).

2. Chocolate first came from Mexico

Ancient Mexican civilizations like the Olmecs, Maya and Aztec used to drink chocolate made from the cacao bean. They called it “xocolātl” which is pronounced “shocolatl” - clearly where we get the word chocolate from! Some other delicious things we eat come from Mexican cuisin - corn, avocados and vanilla!

3. Mexico City is sinking

Modern Mexico City was bulit on the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan which was built on a swamp. So it’s sinking a little bit every year. Actually, not really a little bit - some people claim Mexico City is sinking 50 centimetres every year! It could cause big problems in the future 😬

4. The smallest volcano in the world is NOT in Mexico

Mexico has lots of volcanoes (77 of them!) and lots of people will also tell you that it has the smallest volcano in the world. BUT THAT’S NOT TRUE! Cuexcomate looks like a volcano and it’s only 13 metres tall, but it’s not actually a volcano - it’s a geyser which built up rock around it. Nowadays you can climb down inside it - they have concerts inside!

5. The meteor that killed the dinosaurs landed in Mexico

It’s called the Chicxulub crater and it’s 110 miles across! The date that it crashed to earth fits with the date that a meteor landing on Earth destroyed 75% of everything that lived, including the dinosaurs.
