Countries that were controlled by the British Empire at one point

The British Empire

The British Empire is a complicated topic.

It was a time (about 400 years actually) when Britain took control of lots of different countries around the world. Britain controlled these countries and often treated the people who lived there very badly. The Empire made Britain very rich and powerful but lots of people now realize it created lots of problems and wasn’t fair. It’s a very complicated topic, but here’s a little video to learn more about how it worked and changed over the years.

Although Freya might think that living under British rule made people from Yemen happy, this isn’t true. Some people try to say that the British Empire was a good thing because it helped people, but it hurt a lot more people. We should never try to control other people.

Freya Stark was a real person

Freya Stark grew up in England and Italy. When she was a teenager she got into an accident in a factory and lost her right ear. After that she wore a hat most of the time, so no one could see the gap where her ear was.

She decided to study Arabic and Persian at university, and started to travel afterwards. She travelled in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Egypt and Afghanistan, often on her own, which was quite dangerous. To make money, she wrote books about her journeys and became quite famous.

Her last big journey was to the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan when she was 75 years old. She lived to be 100!

Every time you meet a woman who was a known historical figure, you get a Famous Woman Badge.
